Frequently Asked Questions:
-
How do I remove the “Site” in my iWeb site (i.e. www.mysite.com/Site/index.html)?
iWeb puts this in as standard. It’s fine, some people prefer to change it to “web” or something. You can rename it just by clicking and hovering in iWeb, as you would rename a folder in Finder.
-
My counter widget no longer works (or any other widget)
The ones built-in to iWeb are MobileMe-specific. You can get third party versions elsewhere. Counters aren’t really very accurate anyway – we would recommend you use Google Analytics.
-
Get access to Google Webmaster tools and other Google services.
Optimize how Google interacts with your website. Improve your site’s visibility in Google search results. It’s free. Veiw Google SEO PDF file.
-
I have changed my Domain Name's Nameservers to ns1.macmate.me & ns2.macmate.me but still can't see my site?
DNS (Domain Name Servers) can take from 2 – 48 hours to update depending on the server after a change so please be patient. Also try refreshing your browser as you may be viewing a cached page of the site.
-
I have updated my Website and published the changes using iWeb, Sandvox etc. but the changes are not showing in my browser?
If your Web Design software is showing that your site has successfully published, then try refreshing your web browser as you are possibly still viewing an older cached page of your site. Also double check that you have entered the correct URL (http://www.yoursite.com) in to the address bar.
-
How do i transfer a Domain registered with another company to MacMate?
To Transfer a .com domain name to us from another registrar you will need to ask your current registrar for an EPP code. Send us over the code by email or telephone and we will process the transfer. To Transfer a .co.uk domain name to us from another registrar you will need to ask your current registrar to change the IPS TAG for the domain to ‘ MACACE ‘ again let us know when you have done this and we can do the rest.
-
What does FTP mean?
FTP means File Transport Protocol – FTP is a standard network protocol used to transfer files from one host to another.
-
What are the inbox, public and web folders for?
MacMate has several pre-configured folders already set up for you.
When someone uploads a file to your MacMate account it will appear in your inbox.
Items in the public folder can be seen by any one on the internet by visiting http://yourmacmateusername.macmate.me/public.
The web folder contains your website details for all of your websites and should not be used for anything else. -
Can I edit my iWeb site on another computer?
You can, however you will need to obtain the domain.sites and the domain.sites2 files which are stored in your ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb.
The Library folder can be found by holding down the alt key and clicking the Go menu in finder.
-
Are SQL databases supported in MacMate?
Unfortunately MacMate does not yet support SQL databases for this you would require a WebPack:SE, the details of which can be found by clicking here
-
I have successfully published my site but the changes are not showing on the internet.
Your web browser caches (stores) pages locally so that when you visit them again it does not have to download them from the internet. Press the cmd and R keys together to force a refresh and your web browser will download your site again.
-
Can I have multiple sites in one package?
Yes, you can in the way that MobileMe did multiple sites (as sub-directories) with as many domains as you like pointing to your site/s. You can also create additional sites using our MultiSite feature where domain/s can point directly the the site (there is an extra charge for this).
-
What will my URL be?
It’s best to have your own domain, which will make your site and email look more professional, or more personalized. If not, your URL will be based on your username: http://username.macmate.me. Sub-sites will work straight away simply by creating a new folder for them (http://username.macmate.me/site1/ etc).
-
I already have a domain with someone else?
You can point your domain at your MacMate space, or a multi-site within MacMate – just select this option and you’ll get an email with instructions. We’re happy to help with this too if you need it.
-
Does MacMate work with iWeb?
Oh yes! It’s designed to work with all versions of iWeb really easily. There’s some good step-by-step guides for all versions of iWeb and we’re always happy to help if you get stuck. We’re Mac-specialists so are probably the best help and support you’ll get anywhere for your iWeb site.
-
My design package is asking for FTP details?
MacMate works with all website design packages – we have step-by-step guides for most of them too. Your FTP details will on your welcome email.
-
My current site uses and online site-builder, can I move that to MacMate?
Not usually. Site-builders tie you into the hosting provider so they often ensure you can’t move your site elsewhere. It’s one of the reasons we don’t believe that site-builders are the best way to design your websites. If in doubt, contact us and we can check for you.
-
What if I want to upgrade my site to WordPress or Joomla or something?
At present you’ll need to upgrade your site to one of our professional hosting solutions from £99 / $119 per year (see our MacAce website). We are working to include WordPress and SQL support for other CMS (content management systems) very soon.
-
What to do if you forget your MacMate password.
Firstly check your welcome email, if you have not changed your password since setting up your account then use this.
If you can’t find the welcome email then contact support@macmate.me from the email address you signed up with and we can reset it for you. Alternatively you can call our support department, answer a few security questions and we can reset it for you over the phone.
-
Where does iWeb store the files and folders on your Mac?
iWeb stores all your website information in a file called domain.sites2.
The file can be found here – Home Folder / Library / Application Support / iWeb / domain.sites2
